Project AbZuMeOH

The aim of the joint project AbZuMeOH - Waste to Methanol – is to investigate the potential of utilizing carbon dioxide for methanol synthesis. The CO2 results from the incineration of (biogenic) waste and the production of burnt lime.

The CO2 is to be isolated from the respective exhaust gas flows and made available to the catalytic methanol synthesis in the required purity. The hydrogen required for the formation of methanol can be provided by electrolysis of water. The electricity required for the electrolysis partly derives from the thermal treatment of the biogenic waste and partly supplemented by electricity from renewable energies (green hydrogen).

Oxygen, which occurs as a by-product, can be used advantageously in thermal waste treatment or lime production or made available to other consumers. The aim is to obtain the methanol after subsequent processing in a purity in accordance with the globally recognized IMPCA specification, which allows the product to be used in the fuel sector as well as within the chemical industry (e.g. use in the production of durable goods such as plastics).

BSE Engineering Leipzig GmbH coordinates the consortia, analyzes the normative environment, designs the process, and simulates it for the selected locations. The Provadis University takes on the life cycle assessment as well as the techno-economic assessment of the overall project. Infraserv GmbH & Co. Höchst KG and Schaefer Kalk GmbH & Co. KG support these activities by providing location-specific data, analyzing possibilities for integrating methanol synthesis at their locations and developing a marketing concept.
